MLB Baseball Betting: Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets

Added August 15, 2015 by Levi Watkins

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still taking care of business. They bounced back from a series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this week by taking the opening game of their three game set against the New York Mets. The Mets have been cruising of late and have opened up a 4.5 game lead in the NL East over the slumping Washington Nationals. The bad news for the Pirates is that the St. Louis Cardinals also won on Friday night leaving them six games out of first place (though they do have a 1.5 game advantage in the National League wildcard race). This has been the Bucs’ season in microcosm–they’ve played excellent baseball but just can’t pick up games on the consistent Cardinals. They can point to the fact that they’re just .500 on the road after last night’s win while the Cards are 7 games over .500 away from Busch Stadium.

The Mets might be losing a bit of their momentum as they watch their lead atop the NL East grow as Washington (3-7 L10) self destructs. The Atlanta Braves are treading water 10.5 games out of first. In other words, the Pirates have a much greater sense of urgency to win games in bunches. It might not be enough to run down the steady Cardinals but it’ll keep them in good shape vis a vis the wildcard race. Mets will start lefthander Jon Niese tonight–Niese is a competent though not spectacular pitcher and don’t be fooled by his glossy 1.80 L3 ERA which came against teams that don’t hit LHP well (San Diego, Colorado, Miami). Pittsburgh is 12-9 against LHP this year and putting up good numbers averaging 4.6 runs per game and a .287 batting average–all in excess of their output in all games.

Mets have been excellent at home (42-19 +20.6 units) but they’ve been dominated by the Pirates this year (0-4 -4 units) and for the past few years (5-13 -7.7 units). Granted, the Mets had some bad teams in recent seasons but we just think the Pirates are the better all around team. The Mets have trouble scoring runs at times and that could be their undoing here. Pirates win to keep the pressure on St. Louis.
