College Football Betting: BYU at Boise State

Had this game been played several years ago when Boise State and BYU were vying for Mountain Time Zone football supremacy this would be a titanic matchup. Much has changed since then to diffuse the intensity of this matchup and that is clearly reflected in the price. The entire pecking order of Intermountain West football has changed with Utah going to the Pac 12, Boise State going to the Mountain West and BYU going independent. Throw in some improving programs like Utah State and the dynamic is completely different. BYU was having a great season until the first week of October. They’ve lost three games and starting quarterback Taysom Hill since then. The Cougars are now 4-3 SU/2-5 ATS on the season. Boise State might not be a national powerhouse anymore but the are 5-2 SU/4-3 ATS and atop the somewhat redundant ‘Mountain’ Division of the Mountain West Conference.

One thing that BYU did demonstrate in their home loss to Nevada is that they can put up points and amass yardage even without Hill. Nevada’s #109 ranked total defense certainly played their part but that’s a hopeful sign for the Cougars going forward. The punishing defense the Cougars had in recent years has also deteriorated with the departure of Kyle Van Noy and now they rank #61 in scoring defense, just a few spots ahead of Boise State. In another good bit of news for BYU they’ll get top running back Jamaal Williams back for this game.

Boise State is a tough team to get a handle on. Many people gave them the write off after their season opening loss to Ole Miss but that sure doesn’t look as bad now with the Rebels near the top of the national rankings. The loss to Air Force was a bad one but this Boise team is still pretty good. Their 10 point win last week over San Jose State was the first time they won but didn’t cover all year.

BYU is down but not out and we see no reason they can’t compete with Boise State here. Boise’s home field advantage is overpriced and BYU’s stock took a hit when Taysom Hill went down. The result of that is a good value opportunity on the Cougars.
