NHL Hockey Betting: Columbus Blue Jackets at New York Islanders

Added February 14, 2015 by Levi Watkins

Metropolitan Division action on Saturday’s card as the Columbus Blue Jackets travel to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders. The Islanders have won three straight and are currently one point ahead of Pittsburgh atop the division. They’ve also won six of their last ten games as they try to hold off the Penguins as well as the New York Rangers (3 points back) and the Washington Capitals (4 points back). The Columbus Blue Jackets are well off the pace and will likely miss the playoffs this year. That being said, the team has scrapped hard all season long despite a ridiculous number of injuries. They’re currently playing without starting goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky but have still managed to go 5-5-0 in their last 10 games.

The price on this game is tough to figure. The Islanders should be favored over the Jackets of course but -255 favorites? Worth noting that the Islanders just finished a scheduling sequence playing the doormats of the league (at Buffalo, home against Toronto and Edmonton) and only once–against Edmonton–were they higher than -250 favorites. This Columbus team is a bigger underdog than the Toronto Maple Leafs–a team that is 1-8-1 in their last 10 games? The Islanders have been rough on divisional rivals this year (17-2) along with opponents that have sub .500 records (18-7). Once concern–they have a home game against the hated New York Rangers on deck Monday night making this a pretty significant ‘lookahead spot’ (and incidentally Tuesday night’s game at Carolina a serious letdown spot).

The Jackets aren’t anywhere near as good as the Islanders but they have excelled in one interesting area–they’re 12-4 avenging a home loss to an opponent despite a mediocre overall ‘revenge game’ record (15-13). This could be a coincidence, of course, but if it is it’s the only record among every other Blue Jackets situational record that is better than mediocre. That at least suggests a team that will show up and compete is this spot. The Islanders are the better team but they shouldn’t be a -255 chalk over the hard trying Jackets. We’ll take a huge underdog price with Columbus over a New York Islanders team in a huge lookahead situation.
