NHL Hockey Betting: Minnesota Wild at Washington Capitals

It’s almost hard to remember that just a few weeks ago we were talking about the Minnesota Wild and their ‘goaltending problem’. At the time, the Wild had been through four different goalies with none performing well. In mid January, the Wild acquired Devan Dubynk from Arizona and the prevailing wisdom was that he’d be yet another bust in the team’s revolving door of goalies. Or not. Dubynk has started all 22 games since then and the Wild are 17-5. Dubynk has shot up the statistical charts and is now the #3 goals against average in the league at 2.10. His numbers in Minnesota have been even better with a GAA of 1.55. He’s entered the conversation for the Vezina Trophy which had looked all season to be a match race between Carey Price and Pekka Rinne. Dubnyk’s play has rubbed off on the rest of the team and the Wild are now on the verge of a playoff spot when a couple months back their coach was on death watch.

Now the Wild have a logjam at goalie. Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper are both healthy and for now still on the roster. Since the Wild are paying them both 7 figures this year why not? The question now is what happens in the off season. The Wild will almost certainly extend Dubynk’s deal to keep him in town for awhile. Either Backstrom or Kuemper will have to go. Backstrom is making more money and is older but Kuemper might be less inclined to serve in the backup role than the 37 year old veteran.

For now, the Wild keep winning and we expect that to continue tonight. Washington has been playing very well of late winning 8 of 13. They’ll be without Alex Ovechkin tonight due to a lower body injury and that makes life significantly easier for Dubynk who won’t have to worry about Ovi’s nearly unstoppable one-timer from the faceoff circle. The Wild may just be the better team at this point, are in better form and are the better value–particularly with Ovechkin out. No reason not to jump on the Wild bandwagaon at an underdog price.
