NHL Hockey Betting: New York Rangers at Detroit Red Wings

Added March 04, 2015 by Levi Watkins

Good Eastern Conference hockey matchup for Wednesday night as the New York Rangers travel to Motown to take on the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena. The Rangers are back in red hot form despite the absence of All Star goalie Henrik Lundqvist. The Broadway Blueshirts are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and have 84 points. That puts them 1 point back of their hated rivals the New York Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan Division. It also ties them with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second best record in the Eastern Conference and leaves them four points back of the Montreal Canadiens for top spot.

The Detroit Red Wings are a tough team to figure. They’ve done well this year with a chaotic goaltending situation. Things are back to normal in that front with starter Jimmy Howard and backup Jonas Gustavsson back in the lineup but they’ve lost five of their last nine. They’re coming off a very solid win against the Predators in Nashville and have been off for four days so they’ll definitely be well rested. The Wings are currently in third place in the Atlantic Division with 81 points, 3 back of second place Tampa and 6 back of first place Montreal. They’ve also been playing without Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen, both sidelined with concussions. Franzen remains out but Zetterberg should be back in the lineup tonight.

In years past the absence of Zetterberg and Franzen would have doomed the Wings but they’ve got a young superstar budding in Tomas Tatar. Tatar leads the team with 25 goals and also has the top plus/minus figure. Everyone knew that Tatar was going to be good but few expected this much production from a third year player on a team with a reputation for veteran leadership. The two teams have split their meetings this season with both winning on home ice. In recent years, however, the Rangers have dominating the Wings winning 4 of the last 5 meetings. We just can’t pass up one of the hottest teams in the NHL at an underdog price. You can make a pretty good case that the Rangers should be a slight favorite here or at least ‘pick’em’ due to their recent form. They’re not and we’re taking advantage of that fact.
